Rockcliffe Park
Rockcliffe Park is a suburb, a very charming suburb, with a lake
and a pond and many splendid homes, but as a suburb it probably wouldn't warrant much attention if it weren't for the fact
that it's a suburb of Ottawa. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Blow have lived there, but so, too, have royalty (Crown Princess Juliana of
the Netherlands), prime ministers (John Diefenbaker, Lester Pearson), actors (Hume Cronyn), writers (Elizabeth Smart), and
mandarins, journalists, and business people too numerous to mention. As such, the suburb has been a microcosm of the city,
and if Ottawa isn't exactly a microcosm of the nation, we all know its reach into our lives. Historian Martha Edmond, a Rockcliffe
resident herself, has thoroughly researched the story of these 430 bucolic acres perched on the Ottawa River and found that
in the early nineteenth century, it wasn't bucolic at all--it was more of an industrial crossroads. But in the mid-Victorian
period, Thomas Coltrin, son-in-law of businessman and legislator Thomas McKay, who built Rideau Hall, saw the potential of
the acreage and laid it out as a planned community in a park-like setting. Preserving that setting has been the task ever
since. Generously illustrated, Rockcliffe Park is a satisfying social history that can be enjoyed by Ottawans and non-Ottawans
alike.
